The part that runs inside your application stays open.
The service is commercial. The connectors are not, and they will not become so: what you install in your own codebase should be something you can read, audit and fork.
What is open, and what is not
Open, under Apache 2.0: the SDKs, the batch protocol they speak, the specification of the ingest endpoints, and the OpenAPI document describing the management API. Those are the pieces that sit in your repository or that you write code against, and a monitoring vendor asking you to trust a binary in your own application has asked for too much.
Not open: the server. The grouping, the rollups, the dashboards, the billing and the operations around them are the product, and the product is how this is paid for.
No proprietary SDK required
You can use the official Sentry SDKs or an OpenTelemetry exporter and never install anything of ours.
Documented protocols
The ingest endpoints are specified, so you can write your own client in an afternoon.
Leaving is a DSN
Because the protocols are somebody elses standard, moving away is the same one line as moving in.
Why that trade is the right one
An open protocol with a commercial service behind it means the switching cost is honest: you stay because the product is worth it, not because leaving is expensive. That is a constraint on us rather than on you, and it is the only guarantee of good behaviour that does not require you to trust anybody.

What licence are the connectors under?
Apache 2.0, which permits use, modification and redistribution including commercially, and grants a patent licence.
Will the connectors ever close?
No. They are the part that makes leaving cheap, and a promise about that is only worth anything if it is written where customers can point at it.
